Workshop 5 : Avignon 2025

Using traits and models of hydraulic functioning

Aims: To explore the theoretical and practical implications of using trait databases to parameterise models. Harmonise approaches to parameterising models of forest functioning using functional and mechanistic trait databases. Assessing the implications of methodological choices linked to the use of traits to parameterise models (e.g. imputation, scaling). Particular attention will be paid to plant water and gas exchange and phenological processes.

The idea of this workshop was to work in sub-groups. A working group comprising modellers (if possible different models, working in PEPR Forest and/or FairCarbon) and experimenters (ecophysiological and trait measurements) to (1) discuss the implications of parameterising models of forest functioning/dynamics using traits; (2) define parameterisation strategies based on common trait databases. (3) We hope that this work will enable us to move towards more robust model comparison exercises involving a larger number of species/contexts.
